Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen recently found himself in hot water after an incident at the Singapore Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Dutch driver was involved in a highly disputed incident, which ultimately led to a punishment that left Verstappen livid.
The controversy unfolded when Verstappen was slapped with a time penalty, sparking a heated debate within the F1 community. The penalty triggered an intense reaction from the Dutch ace, who felt hard done by the stewards' decision.
As the news spread like wildfire, fans and commentators alike were kept in the dark about the events that transpired behind closed doors. The mystery surrounding the F1 stewards' deliberations after the Singapore Grand Prix left many wondering: how did Max Verstappen really react?
Now, F1 steward, Dennis Dean has decided to break his silence on the matter. According to Dean, a rather tense 30-minute meeting between Verstappen and the stewards took place after the Grand Prix. Verstappen reportedly expressed his frustration and disappointment towards the stewards, which led to a thorough discussion about the incident and subsequent penalty.
'Max is a competitor, and like all competitors he feels his emotions strongly,' Dean revealed in a recent interview. 'I've never seen anyone that angry. He let us know exactly how he felt.' Dean's candid insight into the private meeting paints a vivid picture of the scene that played out.
When inquired about the stewards' take on the heated exchange, Dean provided insight into the protocol when dealing with disputing drivers. 'There's a certain decorum to the meeting; our job is to listen, to explain the decision and to consider the competitor's point of view. Sometimes that works well, and sometimes it doesn't.'
Although Verstappen's high emotions were noticeable during the 30-minute gathering, he chose not to release any public statement regarding the alleged profanity that might have escaped him. However, Dean made sure to emphasize that their intentions were purely professional and that letting drivers air their grievances sometimes allows for finding grounds for potential future clarifications.
'There is a certain space in this FIA (International Automobile Federation) headquarters in Geneva where two parties can meet to try to resolve a matter. You never know what might come out,' observed Dean.
'You can disagree with someone and not be emotional about it. You don't have to like people to have a discussion, you have to be able to communicate.'
