India Just Made a Shocking Decision That Will Change Rice Export Forever - Details Inside

Kolkata, Sep 27 (PTI) The Centre lifted the ban on the export of non-basmati white rice on Friday with immediate effect, according to a notification. In July 2023, the government imposed the ban to ensure the domestic supply of rice and keep prices under control. Exporters hailed the decision, dubbing it a “game-changer” for the rice export industry in India.

The decision is expected to significantly boost the country’s rice exports, which have been severely impacted due to various restrictions imposed over the past few months. The Centre had earlier banned the export of broken rice in July 2022 and later expanded the ban to cover non-basmati white rice in July 2023 in a bid to control rising domestic rice prices.

Welcoming the move, Vinod Kaul, Director at All India Rice Exporters Association, said that the lifting of the ban would provide a much-needed fillip to rice exports from India. “We are projecting an increase of at least 20-30% in rice exports over the next few months, which will also help in generating employment and revenue for the country,” Kaul added.

The Centre’s decision was also expected to benefit the farmers in the country, particularly those in major rice-producing states like West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. “The relaxation in export norms will help farmers in getting better prices for their produce, which in turn will boost their overall income,” said a senior government official.
