India's resounding victory against Australia in the first Test has significantly boosted their chances of reaching a third consecutive World Test Championship final. While their path to the coveted title is clearer than ever before, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa remain in contention, albeit with tougher qualification scenarios. The race to Lord's in 2025 is undoubtedly heating up as teams around the world scramble to reserve their spot at the pinnacle of test cricket.
Australia's defeat to India has left the Australians in a precarious situation. With their current points tally, Australia will need to win at least 5 of their remaining 7 Test matches to have any chance of making it to the finals. Their path forward seems increasingly difficult as they prepare to take on New Zealand and South Africa in their next two series. A series loss to either of these teams could effectively dash their hopes of reaching the WTC finals.
Sri Lanka, who are currently third in the WTC points table, also stand a decent chance of making it to the finals. However, their prospects depend heavily on their ability to perform well against Pakistan in their upcoming home series. If they manage to defeat Pakistan, they will edge closer to the top two, which is a scenario they desperately need to occur. Moreover, they also need Australia and New Zealand to lose at least a couple of matches, which isn't far-fetched considering the dynamics of test cricket.
New Zealand and South Africa, on the other hand, require near-miraculous runs of results to reach the finals. Both teams need to win almost all of their remaining matches while simultaneously praying for unfavourable results from their counterparts. While this scenario isn't entirely impossible, it appears extremely unlikely given the high standards that teams are maintaining in the test arena.
Despite the tough qualification scenarios that several teams face, there is no denying the unpredictability of test cricket. Teams like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa boast rosters replete with talent, which suggests that their prospects aren't yet entirely extinguished. However, with India's points cushion and their impressive test form, it's clear that they're the ones to beat in the WTC championship.
India's task now is to maintain their momentum and continue to pile up the points. Their next test series against a weaker side like Bangladesh will be crucial in shaping their destiny, and any unexpected mistakes could derail their efforts. Nevertheless, at this point, India seems to be within touching distance of securing their WTC final spot, and it's increasingly difficult to see any teams dismissing their chances of reaching Lord's in 2025.
