Insane Cases That Made 'The Practice' Unmissable TV - Here Are The Top 10 Wild Ones

October 6, 2024

For eight successful seasons, 'The Practice' captivated audiences with its portrayal of the lawyers and staff at the Boston law firm, Donnell, Young, Dole and Frutt. The brainchild of David E. Kelley, the show followed a talented but often unconventional team as they navigated the ups and downs of the justice system, often taking on cases that were as bizarre as they were intriguing.

Throughout its run, 'The Practice' gained a reputation for covering an incredible range of cases, often tackling delicate issues such as mental illness, police misconduct, and abuse of power. And while some episodes focused on more serious matters, others showcased the show's lighter side, with a client base that included everyone from con artists to alleged vampires. Here are ten of the wildest cases to ever make it to court in 'The Practice.'

First, there was the man who genuinely believed himself to be Superman. In an episode that defied explanation, the self-proclaimed superhero stood accused of a string of bizarre incidents, all in the name of protecting the innocent. His attorney, usually stiff upper lip, found it difficult to resist the charm of this client and ended up being drawn into his make-believe world.

Another unforgettable client was the charismatic cannibal, who bore more than a passing resemblance to the infamous Hannibal Lecter. It was hard not to think of the iconic movie as the firm battled to keep this smooth-talking killer off death row. Like Lecter, this character seemed to revel in the sensationalism surrounding his case, often leaving both lawyers and viewers alike wondering what drove him to commit his heinous crimes.

However strange the aforementioned cases were, there was another that easily eclipsed them in terms of sheer, bewildering oddity: the tale of the monkey man. This disturbed individual harbored an unshakeable conviction that he was in fact, a monkey - so fervent was his conviction that he took to the monkey bars to assert his argument. Difficult to watch but difficult to tear the eyes away from, this unsettling spectacle would stay with audiences long after the episode was over.

Even when reviewing the cases after all these years, it's evident why 'The Practice' developed a loyal following. Whether an episode focused on high-stakes corporate crimes or portrayed mundane office conflicts, Kelley wrote his characters with empathy and curiosity. As the now defunct but hardly forgotten series contemplates a future revisit, basking in nostalgia is just one click away for fans remembering these remarkable events.
