Brashard Smith ran 24 yards for a touchdown on the second play of overtime and No. 22 SMU stopped Duke's two-point conversion pass attempt in a 28-27 victory Saturday night at Durham, N.C. SMU (7-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) committed six turnovers but still managed to outlast the Blue Devils in what will be remembered as one of the craziest games of the season.
Despite their turnovers, the Mustangs never gave up and battled back to force overtime. In the extra period, it was Smith who came up huge, breaking through the Duke defense and racing 24 yards to the end zone to put SMU up 28-21.
But Duke refused to go quietly, and on their overtime possession, they managed to punch the ball into the end zone on a 1-yard run by their running back. Instead of opting for the extra point, the Blue Devils decided to go for two and the win, but SMU's defense rose to the challenge and knocked down the pass attempt, securing the Mustangs' thrilling 28-27 victory.
For SMU, the win marked a statement victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and it stamped their status as a legitimate contender in the league. With the victory, the Mustangs moved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, and they now have a stranglehold on the top spot in the ACC.
Meanwhile, for Duke, the loss was a heartbreaker, and it marked a tough pill to swallow for the Blue Devils. Despite their best efforts, they simply couldn't capitalize on SMU's mistakes, and in the end, it cost them the game.
For SMU, Smith was the hero of the night, and his touchdown run in overtime will be remembered for a long time. He finished the game with 105 yards rushing and the game-winning score. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai also had a big night, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns despite a pair of interceptions.
As for Duke, their quarterback, Riley Leonard, threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome SMU's defense in the end. The Blue Devils also got a big effort from their running back, who finished with 95 yards rushing and a touchdown.
