KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yankees slugger Juan Soto knows there will come a time very soon that he will have to make a decision about his future. As the postseason is approaching, the star player's focus is entirely on the playoffs and securing another World Series win for the Bronx Bombers. However, Soto's contractual status and a prospective lucrative offseason have been at the center of attention in the baseball world lately.
Soto, 25, who was traded to the Yankees from the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline, wants to keep his concentration solely on the tasks at hand - beating their playoff opponents and winning a championship. When asked about the looming contract negotiations and the possibility of a massive extension with the Yankees or potentially becoming a free agent, Soto remained tight-lipped about the situation.
'Honestly, my main focus right now is on the playoffs and how I can help the team win,' Soto said in an interview. 'I'm trying not to think too much about my future, and I'm just taking things one game at a time. When the time comes, we will see what happens.'
While Soto was reluctant to discuss his contract situation, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman made it clear that the team intends to have Soto as a part of their lineup for years to come. With the kind of talent that Soto possesses, it's no surprise that the Yankees would want to retain his services.
'Juan Soto is an incredible player who brings a unique set of skills to the table,' Cashman said. 'We are excited to have him on our team and look forward to seeing him perform in the playoffs. We will address his contract situation in due time.'
Given Soto's impressive track record, including winning the World Series in 2019 and multiple National League batting titles, it's clear that the outfielder will be highly sought after during the offseason if he decides to test the free agent market. However, the Yankees organization believes that they have the resources to make a strong case for Soto to remain in the Bronx.
Whether Soto decides to re-sign with the Yankees or pursue other opportunities, one thing is for sure - the star slugger is ready to put his full focus on the postseason and make the most of this playoff run. 'I'm just excited to be in this situation and help the team win as many games as possible,' Soto said, exuding confidence about their chances in the playoffs.
With their sights set on the championship title, the New York Yankees are well-equipped to face any challenge that comes their way. And for Soto, it's all about taking it one step at a time and letting the future take care of itself.
