Investment trusts are set to see a surge in new investment after the government announced it would temporarily pause the enforcement of strict new cost disclosure rules.
The move is seen as a major victory for the industry, which had warned that the rules would have a devastating impact on investment trusts and lead to higher costs for investors.
The rules, which were due to come into effect in October, would have required investment trusts to disclose all costs associated with managing the trust, including charges paid to administrators and custodians.
However, the industry had argued that the rules would be overly burdensome and difficult to implement, particularly for smaller trusts with limited resources.
In a surprise move, the government announced that it would suspend the enforcement of the rules, pending a wider review of the regulatory regime governing investment trusts.
The decision was welcomed by the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), which represents the investment trust sector.
'We are pleased that the government has listened to our concerns and paused the enforcement of the disclosure rules,' said Annabel Brodie-Smith, communications director at the AIC.
'We believe that this will provide a more level playing field for investment trusts and enable them to continue to provide good value for investors.'
The suspension of the rules is expected to be a major boost to investment trusts, which have struggled to attract new investment in recent years.
Falling out of favor with investors, who have instead opted for rival products such as open-ended funds, investment trusts have long argued that they offer a more cost-effective and flexible way to invest.
The decision by the government to suspend the disclosure rules has been seen as a major vindication of the sector's argument that unnecessary regulation was holding it back.
Now, with the rules temporarily out of the way, investment trusts are hoping to secure waves of fresh inflows.
The move has already been greeted with enthusiasm by some investors, who see the suspension of the disclosure rules as a positive development for the sector.
'I think this is a great decision by the government,' said one investment trust investor.
'For too long, unnecessary regulation has held back investment trusts. This move should help to level the playing field and make them a more attractive option for investors.'
But not everyone is convinced. Some critics have argued that the suspension of the disclosure rules is a backward step, which will make it harder for investors to make informed decisions about where to put their money.
'The rules were put in place for a reason,' said one City analyst.
'Investors need to know what they are paying for and how much it costs to run an investment trust. This decision by the government will only serve to confuse matters and make it harder for investors to get the information they need.'
Despite these concerns, the suspension of the disclosure rules is expected to have a major impact on the investment trust sector.
With more than £200 billion in assets under management, investment trusts are a major player in the investment landscape.
The hope is that this move will help to unlock that potential and attract in new investment, helping to boost economic growth and create jobs.
Only time will tell whether this will be the case, but one thing is for certain - this development is a major game-changer for investment trusts and one that will have significant implications for investors everywhere.
