Lewis Hamilton has fired a shot across the bow of the FIA, warning the governing body that it needs to get its act together. The seven-time world champion is not alone in his criticism, with fellow drivers George Russell and others expressing their growing frustration with the leadership of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
The issue at hand is a perceived lack of communication and respect from the FIA towards the drivers. Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA), revealed that the organization had written to the FIA expressing its concerns, only to be met with silence. "I'm a little bit surprised that we haven't had a response," Russell said. "I think it's pretty disappointing, to be honest with you."
Hamilton echoed Russell's sentiments, implying that the FIA's silence was not only unhelpful but also unprofessional. The British driver has been a vocal critic of the FIA in recent times, and his latest comments suggest that the situation is not improving. "Going in the wrong direction" was how The Guardian described the relationship between the drivers and the FIA, and it's hard to argue with that assessment.
The rift between the drivers and the FIA has been growing for some time, and it's starting to have serious consequences. With the drivers feeling unvalued and disrespected, there's a real risk that the situation could escalate further. The drivers are not just complaining for the sake of it; they have legitimate concerns about safety, competitiveness, and the overall direction of the sport.
But despite the growing tensions, the FIA remains quiet. It's not just the drivers who are critical of the governing body's leadership; many fans and observers are also questioning Ben Sulayem's ability to manage the sport effectively. With the relationship between the drivers and the FIA at an all-time low, it's hard to see how things can improve unless there's a significant change in approach from the FIA.
