After absorbing an ugly 41-10 loss at Texas A&M last Saturday, No. 21 Missouri will try to rebound against host Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon in Amherst.
The Tigers (4-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) will face the independent Minutemen (1-5) after being thoroughly outplayed by the Aggies in College Station, Texas.
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz made it clear that there would be no excuses despite the crushing defeat. "We just have to get better," Drinkwitz said. "There are a lot of little things, technically and schematically, where we need to get better."
His Tigers seemed overmatched by Texas A&M, particularly in the first half when the Aggies took a 24-0 lead. The lone bright spot came in the form of Luther Burden III, who accounted for both Missouri touchdowns - one on a pass reception, the other on a punt return.
While the Tigers seek redemption, UMass is simply trying to rebuild its program. The Minutemen have won only one game in six tries this season and are under the leadership of first-year coach Don Brown. UMass is 0-2 at home this season and hasn't won on its own turf since 2019.
Brown knows his team faces a tall order this weekend, saying, "Missouri is an outstanding football team. They have all the ingredients you want - great coach, explosive players, and physicality. We will need to have a near perfect game to have any chance to be in the mix at the end."
The two teams have only faced each other once before - in 2019, when the Tigers earned a 38-7 home victory.
