MITSUI O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) has recently made a significant step towards a low-carbon/decarbonized society by launching the LNG-fueled ferry Sunflower Pirka at the Naikai Zosen Corp. on September 4. The unveiling of this state-of-the-art ferry marks a major milestone in the company's efforts to reduce its environmental impact and lead the world towards a more sustainable future.
According to MOL, the adoption of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) as a fuel source is a key component of its environmental strategy. LNG is a low-carbon fuel that can be put to practical use immediately, making it an attractive alternative to traditional fuels. The company is committed to proactively adopting LNG and other eco-friendly technologies to minimize its carbon footprint.
The launch ceremony for the Sunflower Pirka was attended by Sueji Shinohara, chairman of the Hokuren Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives, who officially named the ferry. The event was also supported by the LNG-fueled tugboat Ishin, which is operated by MOL Group company Nihon Tug-Boat Co. Ltd. and assisted with towing operations during the launch.
The Sunflower Pirka is scheduled for delivery from Naikai Zosen in April 2025 and will enter service on the Oarai-Tomakomai route operated by MOL Sunflower. This new addition will join the Sunflower Kurenai and Sunflower Murasaki, which are already in service on the Osaka-Beppu route. The Sunflower Kamuy, a sister ship of the Sunflower Pirka, is also set to enter service in early 2025. With these four LNG-fueled ferries, the MOL Group will become the largest operator of LNG-fueled ferries in Japan, offering a unique blend of stable logistics and passenger transport services.
One of the most impressive features of the Sunflower Pirka is its ability to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 35 percent compared to vessels currently serving on the Hokkaido route. This significant reduction is made possible by the adoption of the Ishin hull form and various state-of-the-art technologies, including energy-saving devices developed by Naikai Zosen. The ferry's eco-friendly design and features will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in society and support Japan's efforts to address climate change.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the Sunflower Pirka is designed to support Japan's Modal Shift and address the anticipated "2024 logistics problem" by providing more space for trucks and more comfortable accommodations for truck drivers. This will enhance the overall logistics experience and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable transportation network.
