The University of North Dakota's Fighting Hawks hockey team managed to salvage a win on Friday against Robert Morris, but it wasn't exactly the kind of game fans were expecting. The 4-3 victory was largely thanks to Jayden Perron's overtime heroics, but the rest of the game was marred by a lackluster performance that saw UND blow not one, but two leads.
UND got off to a strong start, scoring the opening goal and taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. However, RMU fought back hard in the second period, netting two unanswered goals to tie the game up. The Fighting Hawks regained their composure and took a 3-2 lead into the final period. But once again, they let their opponents back into the game, with RMU scoring the equalizing goal to send the game into overtime.
Despite their struggles, UND was able to escape with the win thanks to Perron's overtime goal. The victory was a welcome one, but the Fighting Hawks won't be thrilled with their overall performance. "We're happy to get the win, but we know we didn't play our best hockey," said UND Head Coach Brad Berry. "We need to do a better job of closing out games and maintaining our focus for the full 60 minutes."
The win brings UND's record to (insert record), and the team will look to build on this momentum as they head into their next game. For now, though, they can breathe a sigh of relief thanks to Perron's overtime heroics.
