DETROIT (AP) — Jeep is recalling more than 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs worldwide because they can catch fire with the ignition turned off.
This recall comes as a result of several reported incidents of fires that occurred with the ignition turned off.
According to Jeep, the fires can start even when the vehicle is stationary and the ignition is turned off, but only if the vehicle is plugged into a charging station.
Jeep owners are being advised to stop charging their vehicles immediately and to park them outdoors in a safe location away from other vehicles or buildings.
This safety precaution is being taken because the fires can start suddenly and with little warning, even when the vehicle is turned off.
The company is currently working on software updates that will prevent the fires from starting, but until then, owners are advised to take precautions.
This recall affects several different models of Jeep plug-in hybrid SUVs, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and the Jeep Wrangler 4xe.
Jeep owners can visit the Jeep website to see if their vehicle is included in the recall and to schedule a software update as soon as it becomes available.
This recall is a safety precaution taken by the company to prevent any further incidents and to ensure the safety of Jeep owners.
The company is expected to send notification letters to affected owners, but owners are advised to take action now to ensure their safety.
