It's no secret that celebrities often use their music as a form of expression and a way to tell their side of the story. When it comes to breakup songs, fans often assume that the artist is trying to exact revenge on their ex or at least vent their frustrations in a creative way. However, according to singers John Mayer and Shawn Mendes, there's more to it than meets the eye.
During a recent interview, the 'Stitches' singer, Shawn Mendes, shared his thoughts on why break-up songs sometimes don't tell the whole story. Mendes stated that the media and the public often get caught up in the juicy details of celebrity breakups, but what gets lost in translation is the context and the emotions behind the song.
'Sometimes, the whole picture isn't conveyed in the music,' Mendes explained. 'People tend to focus on the parts that confirm their initial thoughts, but what about the rest of the story? The emotions, the struggles, the complexity of a relationship - all that gets lost when we simplify a breakup into a three-minute song.'
John Mayer, who has also been on the receiving and giving end of break-up songs, chimed in on the topic, sharing his own experiences with writing about his ex-girlfriends. Mayer pointed out that, in reality, there's often a lot more going on behind the scenes, and the break-up songs that get released to the public are only a small piece of the overall narrative.
One of the common criticisms against breakup songs is that they promote a one-sided view of a relationship. The artist paints themselves as the victim, and the ex gets left looking like a villain. However, as Mendes pointed out, relationships are complex and multifaceted, and the truth is often somewhere in the middle.
'Look at Taylor Swift's song 'Dear John,'' Mendes said, using the famous breakup song as an example. 'While the song was certainly an expression of Taylor's emotions, John Mayer has come out and said his side of the story too. So, which one is the 'truth'? Maybe it's somewhere in between. Maybe the truth lies in the details that neither side is sharing.'
Interestingly, both Mendes and Mayer have had their fair share of breakup songs written about them by their ex-girlfriends. But what's even more fascinating is how they choose to react to these songs.
'When I hear a song about me, I can see what that person is trying to do,' Mendes said. 'It's a form of self-therapy for them, and I respect that. At the end of the day, I'd rather see an honest expression of someone's emotions than try to fake it.'
Mayer shared similar sentiments, saying, 'A breakup song is like a warning sign on a journey. If you see it as a personal attack, you're going to get stuck in the negativity. But if you can see it as a manifestation of their emotions - and that's not about you; that's about them - then you can learn to appreciate it as art.'
As the public continues to devour breakup songs and spin stories around celebrity breakups, it's refreshing to hear the other side of the story. So, the next time you find yourself singing along to your favorite breakup song, take a step back and remember - there's more to it than meets the ear.
