Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui has expressed his disappointment and frustration after his side succumbed to a humiliating 4-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. However, what added insult to injury for the visiting team was the red card received by Mohammed Kudus in the 86th minute of the match.
Kudus, who has been impressive for Wolves this season, will be out for at least the next three matches after being given his marching orders following a heated altercation involving Tottenham players Micky van de Ven and Pape Sarr. The Ajax loanee was seen striking both players in the face, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to brandish a red card, reducing Wolves to ten men and leaving them reeling.
Kudus' moment of madness has undoubtedly earned him a dressing room lecture from Lopetegui. Speaking to reporters after the match, the Wolves manager hinted at a heart-to-heart conversation with his Ghana international midfielder to address the red card. He may question Kudus' temperament and playing mentality, particularly given the player's involvement in the London side's downfall.
Lopetegui believes Wolves can learn valuable lessons from their encounter with Spurs. If there is one thing that is now a top priority, it is to maintain discipline and prevent minor altercations from spiraling out of control on the field. "Kudus' red card undoubtedly influenced the outcome, especially considering our performance prior to the red card," Lopetegui explained.
The ex-Real Madrid and Sevilla manager might have watched in awe of Kudus' incredible skills on the pitch but will also talk about some major areas of concern that will determine whether he still holds a spot in the starting lineup when he returns from his suspension. With many replacements vying for the same spot in the starting lineup, Kudus must channel his energies positively and effectively become an essential attacking component, staying out of controversies that hinder his development as a professional.
