Kaleb Johnson Fueled Iowa Set for Upset Over No. 3 Ohio State in High-Stakes Showdown!

October 4, 2024

No. 3 Ohio State is riding a four-game winning streak to open the season, but the Buckeyes may be in for their toughest test yet when they welcome Iowa to Columbus on Saturday.

Iowa (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) has already shown it can compete with top-tier opponents, falling just short in a 34-27 loss to Iowa State in Week 2. Since then, the Hawkeyes have rattled off three consecutive victories, led by the explosive running of sophomore phenom Kaleb Johnson.

Johnson, who leads the Hawkeyes with 326 rushing yards on the season, could be the X-factor that gives Ohio State its first real challenge of the year. The dynamic back has already shown an ability to break tackles and turn short gains into long, game-changing plays.

No. 3 Ohio State (4-0, 1-0), however, has more than enough firepower to match Johnson and the Hawkeyes. Led by quarterback Kyle McCord, the Buckeyes boast an offense that ranks among the top five nationally in scoring, with an average of 48.5 points per game.

McCord and company will face an Iowa defense that has proven susceptible to big plays. The Hawkeyes rank 94th nationally in pass defense, giving up an average of 262 yards per game through the air. Ohio State's high-powered attack could be poised to exploit that weakness.

The key to victory for Iowa may lie in its ability to control the clock and limit Ohio State's possessions. If Johnson can continue to churn out yards on the ground, the Hawkeyes may be able to exploit the Buckeyes' one weakness on defense: stopping the run. Ohio State ranks just 67th nationally in rush defense, giving up an average of 141 yards per game.

As the two Big Ten foes square off on Saturday, only one thing is certain: fans can expect a physical, hard-hitting battle between two teams with legitimate conference title aspirations. Iowa is looking for an upset that could propel the Hawkeyes into the top 25, while No. 3 Ohio State is seeking to keep its College Football Playoff hopes intact.

The matchup between Iowa and No. 3 Ohio State is set for 3:30 ET on CBS. With a sold-out crowd and national television audience watching, these two Big Ten rivals are ready to put on a show.
