Dug McDaniel scored 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting as Kansas State stunned No. 3 Iowa State with an 80-61 win in a Big 12 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
Coleman Hawkins finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats, who improved to 2-1 in conference play. The win marked Kansas State's first road victory over a top-five team since 2018.
Iowa State, which had won 23 consecutive home games, struggled from beyond the arc, making just 6 of 24 three-point attempts. The Cyclones were led by Jaren Holmes, who scored 15 points, but the team was unable to overcome a 40-26 deficit at halftime.
The Wildcats, on the other hand, shot 48.3% from the field and outrebounded the Cyclones 37-25. Kansas State also forced 14 turnovers and held Iowa State to just 38.5% shooting.
The win for Kansas State is a significant boost to its NCAA Tournament resume. The Wildcats will look to build on the momentum when they host TCU on Wednesday. Iowa State, meanwhile, will try to bounce back on the road against Oklahoma State on Monday.
