Kieran Culkin Unleashes on Former Co-Star Michael Cera: The Rivalry That's Been Burning for Years

September 16, 2024

Kieran Culkin has spilled the beans about his long-standing rivalry with former co-star Michael Cera. In a hilarious episode of Hot Ones, Culkin revealed the aspects of Cera's personality that have been driving him nuts for years.

The Succession and Home Alone star shared that despite striking up a close friendship with Cera during the filming of the 2010 comedy action movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and again in the Broadway production of This Is Our Youth, there was one thing about Cera that always left him frustrated. "He's also wildly competitive, but under-the-radar," Culkin explained.

Culkin described how he'd often teach Cera new games and, despite going easy on him, would get crushed in the end. He also mentioned that Cera had an uncanny ability to pick up any instrument and become an expert at it. "He plays like every instrument and he taught himself how, it's like 'f--k you'. He's like, 'what's this? Oh I can play it, I'll play it better that you.'"

Hot Ones host Sean Evans recalled Cera's 2018 appearance on the series, describing him as "famously, wholly unaffected" by the increasingly spicy wings. Culkin added that when he asked Cera about the experience, he downplayed it, saying, "It was fine."

Sean chimed in, saying that Cera handled the wings on the show better than he did himself, which left Culkin joking, "Yeah, stop being perfect dude. Get out of here."

During the episode, Culkin also shared about his experience hosting Saturday Night Live, nearly 30 years to the day since his three cameos when his brother Macauley Culkin hosted. Additionally, he revealed his favorite insult from his wisecracking Succession character Roman.
