The Smiths reunion that was supposedly on the horizon may be nothing more than a distant dream now, and according to KISS bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons, it has nothing to do with artistic differences or ego clashes. Simmons claims that Johnny Marr, the legendary guitarist of The Smiths, rejected an extremely lucrative offer for a reunion because Marr and his bandmates are simply unknown to the general public.
In a recent statement, Simmons stated that many ordinary people would be unfamiliar with Marr, one of the most skilled guitarists in alternative rock history. When Marr was approached with the notion of a reunion, he was presented with an eye-watering sum of money and the promise that the reunion would reap massive rewards, including financial gains. Yet, Marr, who formed a defining partnership with Morrissey as the frontmen of The Smiths, stubbornly refused the offer.
However, Marr has been one of the main factors behind the absence of a new collection celebrating The Smiths' greatest hits. After releasing eight full-length albums from 1984 to 1987, The Smiths managed to garner international recognition for their dreamy melodies, caustic social commentary, and an eclectic jumble of jangly guitar riffs. There has been no official news that band members Morrissey, Marr, Andy Rourke, or Mike Joyce (who replaced original drummer Dale Hibbert in the first year of the band's formation) have all recently met to finalize preparations for a possible comeback after breaking up in 1987.
In Marr's opinion, reunion tours and the like are only ideal for ensuring larger profits based on brand name recognition rather than genuine artistry. If a new album lacks new music and a new sound that moves their careers forward, he isn't likely to proceed with plans for such a tour and reunion. On the other hand, according to numerous reports, Gene Simmons is of the opinion that financial benefits are crucial for maintaining the livelihoods of aging rock stars, even when the fame fades away.
Despite all indications, Simmons has blasted Marr for prioritizing artistic ambitions over substantial financial rewards. Furthermore, Simmons expressed that the long-time guitarist should recognize the worth of The Smiths brand name and perform with the legendary group even if his artistic vision hasn't grown much after two decades.
