Knife-Wielding Man Sparks Deadly Crossfire in Brooklyn Train Station - Multiple Lives Changed in a Split Second

Four people were wounded at a Brooklyn train station Sunday when police officers shot at a man threatening them with a knife, authorities said.

The people hit by police gunfire included the man with the blade, one of the officers, and two innocent bystanders, the AP reports.

The bloody confrontation occurred when the officers, responding to a call about a man acting erratically, approached the suspect and the man allegedly pulled out a knife.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, with multiple shots fired and several people bleeding from gunshot wounds. The streets surrounding the train station were quickly evacuated as officers secured the area.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said one witness, shaken by what she had seen. “The man was holding a knife and yelling at police, and then shots were fired. People were screaming and running everywhere.”

The AP reports that the man with the blade sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody. He has not been identified by authorities.

The wounded officer has been treated for minor injuries, and authorities have released no information about the identities of the innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.

The shooting will be reviewed by two separate panels to determine whether the use of force was justified, and to identify how such a chaotic situation can be better prevented in the future.

“The safety of our citizens is always the top priority for the NYPD,” said a spokesperson for the department. “Unfortunately, there are times when split-second decisions have to be made to ensure that safety, and those actions will always be subject to review.”
