Lancers Left Reeling: How Humboldt Pulled Off the Ultimate Upset

December 14, 2024

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s boys didn’t need much of a reminder about the dangers visiting Crest High posed Thursday. The last time the teams played, in January at the War on 54 Tournament, the Lancers left Humboldt reeling on the wrong end of a nail-biting finish.

It seemed like history was about to repeat itself as the Lancers got off to a strong start, capitalizing on Humboldt’s early jitters. The home team struggled to find their footing, squandering several scoring chances and turning the ball over more times than they would have liked. Crest, on the other hand, came out swinging, playing with an energy and tenacity that left Humboldt scrambling to keep up.

However, as the game wore on, it became increasingly clear that this wasn’t going to be a repeat of the War on 54 Tournament. Humboldt slowly but surely gained their composure, finding their rhythm and exploiting the weaknesses in Crest’s defense. The Lancers, who had been riding high on their strong start, began to tire, struggling to contain the relentless Humboldt press.

It was only a matter of time before the game began to slip away from Crest, and when the dam finally burst, it was a deluge of Humboldt points that washed over them. The home team poured in shot after shot, taking advantage of the Lancers’ lack of depth and conditioning. As the final buzzer sounded, Humboldt stood victorious, having weathered the early storm and emerged with a hard-fought win.

The victory marked a significant turning point in the season for Humboldt, who had been searching for a signature win. It was also a testament to their resilience and determination, having bounced back from the rocky start to outlast their opponents. Meanwhile, Crest was left to ponder what could have been, a difficult stretch of games looming large on the horizon.

The win capped a thrilling evening of high school hoops, one that would be remembered by both teams for a long time to come. As for Humboldt, they now turn their attention to their next matchup, eager to build on this momentum and keep their winning ways going.
