CALI Colombia AP The fourth mass coral bleaching has once again brought the world to its knees with a dire warning from the United Nations scientists and governments alike about the extinction of coral reefs Without immediate action the world as we know it is headed for an unprecedented disaster With this grim reality looming large the United Nations has made an urgent call for increased funding to protect these marine treasures that are struggling to survive under threat of extinction Given the gravity of the situation the United Nations has called for an emergency session at the Colombia biodiversity summit where key stakeholders including governments scientists and non governmental organizations have converged to take stock of the situation The stakes are high and the time for action is now as warned by the United Nations The alarming rate at which coral reefs are disappearing is no longer a distant threat but an existential crisis for life as we know it on our planet Thus the call for increased funding to protect coral reefs that has been loudly proclaimed cannot be overemphasized The time for debate is over Now is the time for concrete action to prevent an impending disaster that if it were to unfold will be a double edged sword to the very survival of the human species as we know it On one hand the tourism industry the source of livelihood for millions around the world would be devastated since coral reefs are a key attraction for ocean lovers and enthusiasts On the other hand people who rely on fishing for a source of income would be dealt a huge blow since coral reefs provide breeding habitat for a majority of global fish stocks A crisis of monumental proportions awaits us on the other side should the threats to coral reefs be allowed to prevail So the urgent UN call for increased funding to protect coral reefs from extinction cannot be ignored under the present circumstances The very existence of life on Earth and the livelihood of millions worldwide hangs in the balance Scientists have run out of options and only an injection of funds can save the day In other words it is a make or break moment A lifeline that can pull human civilization back from the precipice But time is of the essence If increased funding is not forthcoming the result will be a disaster of biblical proportions For all intent and purposes it is a now or never situation that the world is staring at in its collective face The Colombia biodiversity summit is the last best chance to set things right The message is clear It s all or nothing that the world is called to do to save coral reefs Thereafter the only course available will be a cry over spilt milk Needless to say but all relevant stakeholders must come to the party at the Colombia biodiversity summit in a bid to save the world from certain ruin now that all else has failed in the dying cause of our planet.
