It was a dramatic afternoon at The Valley on Saturday as Wrexham, the high-flying League One side owned by Hollywood heavyweights Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, saw their automatic promotion dreams dealt a significant blow.
Trailing 2-2 and heading into injury time, the league's most high-profile club was left reeling after a last-gasp penalty decision went against them, allowing Charlton Athletic to snatch a dramatic equalizer and earn a share of the spoils.
The result leaves Wrexham outside the automatic promotion places, a position they will be determined to rectify as the season wears on. With pressure mounting on Phil Parkinson's men to deliver a top-two finish and ensure their status as a Championship side next season, such setbacks will undoubtedly be met with a mixture of frustration and disappointment.
Given the magnitude of the fixture, the stage was set for a cagey affair. Charlton, still holding onto faint hopes of a late playoff push, were fully aware of the need to nullify Wrexham's attacking threat, particularly the dangerous Paul Mullin, who has consistently proven himself to be one of the most prolific marksmen in the league.
As proceedings got underway, it was Charlton who looked more assured, causing Wrexham problems with their pace and movement. The visitors, though, slowly found their footing and began to settle into their usual rhythm, exploiting the spaces left available by their hosts as they gradually dominated proceedings.
Just when it seemed as though Wrexham were poised to take control of the tie, disaster struck as Charlton pounced on a defensive lapse to snare the opening goal. But to their credit, Parkinson's side refused to buckle and launched a spirited fightback, eventually securing the equalizer their endeavors deserved.
Spurred on by their leveling goal, Wrexham began to assert their authority, dictating the tempo of the match and pushing Charlton onto the back foot. But with time running out, a second Charlton goal put the hosts back in ascendancy and placed Wrexham on the back foot.
Still, the visitors never gave up hope and just as Charlton were seeking to preserve their slender lead, Wrexham equalized for a second time, with the match appearing destined for a share of the spoils. But then came the moment that would define the match: the late penalty decision that not only stole victory from Wrexham's grasp but denied them the precious three points needed to keep the pressure on their automatic promotion rivals.
While defeat would have been catastrophic, the late lifeline Charlton secured might yet have provided a timely wake-up call for Wrexham. There can be little doubt that Parkinson and his side have all the makings of a side worthy of promotion, but to get there, they'll need to rediscover their winning touch – starting with their next outing.
