Legendary Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney Set for Emotional Showdown with Protégé

October 17, 2024

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Tony Elliott was a walk-on graduate receiver in 2003 who finally thought he'd have a chance for more playing time at Clemson when his position coach left and in walked a young, energetic assistant in Dabo Swinney. Unbeknownst to Elliott at the time, his football career was about to take an unexpected turn for the better, one that would ultimately see him become one of the finest coaches in the business.

Fast forward nearly two decades, and Elliott now finds himself facing his longtime mentor and friend Dabo Swinney as he leads Virginia against Clemson this weekend. It's a matchup that has sparked plenty of emotions, not just for Elliott and Swinney, but for the entire Clemson community.

Swinney, who took over as Clemson's head coach in 2008, proudly reflects on the incredible journey Elliott has been on. 'Tony's been like a brother to me, we've been through so much together,' he said in a press conference earlier this week. 'But come game time, we'll be opponents on opposing sides, and that's just part of the job.'

Elliott, who worked under Swinney as Clemson's co-offensive coordinator from 2015 to 2021, credits his former boss for helping him develop the skills he needed to succeed in college football. 'Dabo saw something in me when I was just trying to get onto the field,' Elliott said. 'His guidance, support, and trust in me helped shape the coach I am today.'

When Elliott was introduced as Virginia's head coach in December 2021, Swinney was quick to offer his congratulations. The two have remained close friends despite their new roles, but that friendship will temporarily take a back seat on gameday.

The matchup between Clemson and Virginia promises to be a thrilling encounter, with the emotional undertones of the Elliott-Swinney connection adding an extra layer of intrigue. As the Tigers look to maintain their winning streak, Elliott's Cavaliers will try to cause an upset. Whatever the outcome, it's clear that this game means a lot more to these two coaches than just a win or loss.
