Macau has been a hub for tea enthusiasts for centuries, with a rich history of tea production and consumption that dates back to the 17th century. The city has played a significant role in brewing the world's love for drinking tea, and now, a team of tea aficionados are on a mission to promote its health benefits.
Hong Kong-based historian Lo Heng Kong, who has spent years studying the history of tea in Macau, has been working closely with Andrew U, the tea master at Galaxy Macau integrated resort, to promote the health benefits of tea.
Andrew U, a renowned tea expert, pairs the drink with a wide variety of food to enhance its flavor and aroma. But, as he puts it, "tea is not just about taste – it's also about health."
Lo Heng Kong and Andrew U point to multiple scientific studies that have shown the health benefits of drinking tea. Tea has been found to have antioxidant properties, reduce the risk of heart disease, and even have anti-inflammatory properties. The historian and tea master duo wants to use this knowledge to promote tea consumption globally.
"Macau has played a pivotal role in introducing tea to new regions," said Lo Heng Kong. "With this legacy comes the responsibility to promote its health benefits, especially now when people need it more than ever."
To this end, the pair is organizing a series of tea-related events, workshops and exhibits at Galaxy Macau, aimed at educating the public on tea's health benefits. Visitors will have the chance to taste and learn about the art of pairing tea with food.
Macau's love affair with tea dates back to the Portuguese era when the Portuguese introduced their unique brewing techniques to the region. Since then, Macau has been a melting pot for tea culture from different parts of the world.
"Tea master Andrew U's approach is quite unique in the sense that he incorporates local flavors and ingredients to create distinctive and tantalizing tea blends," said Lo Heng Kong. "He showcases how versatile tea can be when paired with various food, and that's exactly what we're aiming to promote globally."
Macau has made its presence felt in global tea culture and now it's here to show that tea-making traditions aren't just for the aesthetic; but are deeply rooted in a deep history of providing benefits that stretch far and beyond our cups.
