TORONTO (AP) — Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs was taken off the court in a wheelchair due to an apparent back injury late in the first half Friday night against the Toronto Raptors. The incident occurred with just a few minutes left to play in the first half, as Suggs collided with a Raptors player while going for a rebound. He immediately clutched his lower back and fell to the floor, writhing in pain.
The Magic's training staff rushed to his side, and after a few minutes of treatment, they carefully helped him onto a wheelchair, which was brought onto the court to transport him to the locker room. The crowd at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto fell silent, with many fans expressing concern for the young guard's well-being.
Suggs, the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, has been a key player for the Magic this season, averaging 11.5 points and 4.5 assists per game. His injury is a significant blow to the team, which is already struggling to find consistency in their lineup. The Magic were trailing the Raptors by 10 points at the time of Suggs' injury, and his absence was deeply felt in the second half.
The severity of Suggs' injury is still unknown, but the fact that he was unable to put any weight on his legs and required a wheelchair to leave the court is a cause for concern. The Magic's medical staff will likely conduct further tests and evaluations to determine the extent of the injury and provide a timeline for his return to the court.
Meanwhile, the Raptors took advantage of Suggs' absence and went on to win the game 110-97. Despite the loss, the Magic are more concerned about the health and well-being of their young star, who has shown tremendous promise and potential in his rookie season. As the team looks to regroup and adjust their lineup, one thing is certain – the injury to Jalen Suggs is a tough pill to swallow for the Magic and their fans.
