TORONTO (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs was forced to leave the game against the Toronto Raptors after suffering an apparent back injury late in the first half on Friday night.
The incident occurred with just a few minutes left to play in the first half, when Suggs fell to the ground, clutching his back in agony. The crowd fell silent as the Magic's training staff rushed to attend to the injured player.
After a few moments, it became clear that Suggs was unable to walk off the court under his own power, and a wheelchair was summoned to transport him to the locker room for further evaluation.
The extent of Suggs' injury is not yet known, but the fact that he was unable to put any weight on his back is a worrying sign for the Magic, who have been struggling to find consistency this season.
Suggs, who was drafted fifth overall by the Magic in the 2021 NBA draft, has been a key player for the team this season, averaging over 10 points and 5 assists per game. His injury is a significant blow to the Magic's already depleted roster.
The Magic went on to lose the game 110-102, but the focus was clearly on Suggs' health, with his teammates and coaches all expressing concern for the young guard.
'It's tough to see one of your teammates go down like that,' said Magic forward Franz Wagner. 'We're all thinking about Jalen and hoping he's okay.'
The Magic will undoubtedly be monitoring Suggs' condition closely over the coming days, and will be hoping that the injury is not as serious as it initially appeared.
As for the game itself, the Raptors were led by Pascal Siakam, who scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Magic, on the other hand, were led by Cole Anthony, who scored 24 points but was unable to inspire his team to victory.
The loss drops the Magic to 20-30 on the season, while the Raptors improve to 25-25. The Magic will be back in action on Sunday, when they travel to face the Brooklyn Nets.
