Major Development Alert: Your Google Home App is About to Get a Whole Lot Smarter

December 17, 2024

The Google Home app is about to take a significant leap forward as it begins to roll out a major new update. Last month, Google teased an upcoming feature that would change the way users interact with their smart home devices, and now that update is finally starting to arrive.

As part of its Public Preview program, the Google Home app will now offer Admin and Member access levels, giving users more control over who can manage their smart home devices. This means that users will be able to assign different levels of access to different people, allowing them to choose who can make changes to their smart home setup and who can only interact with it in a limited way.

The Admin access level, as the name suggests, will grant users full control over their smart home devices. This will include the ability to make changes to device settings, add or remove devices, and manage access levels for other users. Meanwhile, the Member access level will be more limited, allowing users to interact with smart home devices but not make any changes to settings or manage access levels.

This new feature is designed to make it easier for users to manage their smart home devices in a multi-person household. For example, parents may want to grant their children Member access to the smart home system, allowing them to turn lights on and off or adjust the thermostat, but not make any changes to the underlying settings. Similarly, guests may also be granted Member access, allowing them to interact with smart home devices but not make any changes to the setup.

The rollout of this new feature is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve the Google Home app and make it more user-friendly. In recent months, the company has added a number of new features to the app, including improved device management and enhanced smart home automation capabilities.

As with any new feature, there may be some teething issues as users get used to the new access levels and how they work. However, overall, this update is a positive step forward for the Google Home app and will help to make it an even more powerful and flexible tool for managing smart home devices.
