Turbulent times are indeed ahead for Malaysia Airlines as the airline faces a multitude of problems including flight U-turns, technical issues, talent troubles, and safety concerns - painting a very concerning picture for this once celebrated Southeast Asian flagship carrier.
Malaysia's Subang Airport recorded a significant 25% rise in international passenger traffic in August, and this boost is expected to trickle down to its major carrier, also known as MAS, resulting in future implications.
However, the concern surrounding the continued cancellations and flight disruptions for Malaysia Airlines still lingers, raising eyebrows as to the real extent of the issues, and whether the inconvenience to its customers is overblown or genuinely a systematic, and potentially deep-seated problem for the airline.
Further muddying the waters, there have been accusations made against rival airlines for actively poaching and luring away trained personnel from Malaysia Airlines - compounding a problem at a difficult time, as an exodus of top talent to rival carriers signifies more than just a 'brain drain' but an increasing likelihood of operations disruptions.
The Marketing and Communications section of Malaysia Airlines must put up a spirited defence against escalating public anxiety - that may have some legitimate concerns but seems overhyped in part to fit some type of personal narrative designed to malign its repute.
Numerous travel analyses are suggesting changes in what once defined Malaysia Airlines - this reality could signal potential performance risks as this cut directly eats into customer-confidence and airline-profitability - meaning what used to be labelled Malaysia Airlines can now reasonably open the door to dropping and poor future statistics on the much needed figures based revenue yearly assessments for this public, as well as private invested firms.
On an optimistic note, this airline giant still maintains plenty of leverage to turn things around - by embracing fundamental company changes like a human Capital-approach, boosting profits should not be on the horizon such that ensuring that things will drastically reshape as profit expectations grow.
Much is required of MAS in order to take back its shine in the sky: it must revolutionize its communication capabilities to respond to mounting crisis, work to rebuild trust through an understanding of consumer confidence - bolstered through positive rebranding, while strengthening operational efficiency via newer, high-performance-based standards in retaining trained and skilled workers, such would stifle unproductive competition.
