Rasmus Hojlund was once again the hero for Manchester United as they secured a well-deserved victory over Bodo/Glimt in their European clash. The Danish forward netted a brace in the encounter, taking his goal tally to an impressive five in his last two starts for the Red Devils.
Hojlund's impressive form in front of goal has been a welcome relief for manager Erik ten Hag, who has been searching for a reliable goal-scorer since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 20-year-old's ability to find the back of the net has been drawing comparisons to Erling Haaland, with many pundits tipping him to become one of the best strikers in the world in the not so distant future.
Much of the pre-match hype centered around the return of Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen to Old Trafford, after his side's impressive performance against United last season. However, it was the opponent's opposite number Erik ten Hag who would have the last laugh, thanks to the heroics of Rasmus Hojlund.
The Dutch manager decided to stick with the same starting lineup that picked up a narrow win in their last outing, a decision that paid off early in the first half. Hojlund's opener came in the 16th minute, as he expertly diverted a Diogo Dalot cross past the onrushing Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper. This was followed by a second just five minutes later, a fine left-footed effort that curled into the bottom corner from 15 yards out.
Bodo/Glimt's response to the early setbacks was lukewarm, and their only chance of note came just before the half-hour mark when Gilbert Koomson headed a Bert Hoven's cross into the side netting. Manchester United's goalkeeper, meanwhile, was relatively untroubled throughout the encounter, with his side's comfortable two-goal cushion allowing them to see out the rest of the half without too much concern.
United's dominance continued into the second half, as they began to show their true attacking flair. A quickfire trio of chances beckoned, starting with Bruno Fernandes who dragged wide, followed by an effort from Antony that sailed high and wide before Hojlund would come close to completing his hattrick with a low shot that was saved by the away goalkeeper in the 58th minute.
The win was no less than what Erik ten Hag's men deserved, as they moved to the top of the Europa League group table. For now at least, Manchester United's striking problems seem to be over with Rasmus Hojlund leading the charge in goal-scoring duties. However, it remains to be seen whether the Danish forward can continue this brilliant form when Manchester United get back to the cutthroat nature of the Premier League.
