Harlequins prop and England international Joe Marler has announced his unexpected decision to retire from international rugby. This sudden move has sent shockwaves throughout the world of rugby. The English rugby team will have to adjust to life without one of its most prominent players in the front row.
Marler, who has been an integral part of England's front row since his debut in 2010, stated that he will be continuing to play club rugby with Harlequins. However, he felt that it was time to step away from the international stage, bringing to a close an illustrious career that spanned 14 years and included numerous international titles.
Hailing from East Sussex, Marler began his rugby journey at a young age. His journey from a young player to becoming a professional rugby player was nothing short of challenging. Despite not picking up a rugby ball until he was nine, Joe made rapid strides in the sport, going on to win four successive Premiership titles with Harlequins.
Throughout his illustrious career, Marler has remained dedicated to both his club and country. As a stalwart of the English front row, he became an unmissable figure on the rugby pitch. Despite numerous setbacks along the way including a ten-week ban for kicking Grenoble prop Arnaud Marchoire, the now-retired England player's resilience enabled him to continue as one of England's key figures.
His career has not been without its controversy; however, he is widely regarded as one of the finest loosehead props in world rugby today. His consistent display and professional attitude made the prop a favourite among fans and selectors alike.
England will now have to transition into a new era without Joe Marler. Marler's decision to step away will certainly open doors for new talent, but filling the sizeable gap that Marler leaves behind remains an ordeal for England selectors.
Now, a new journey beckons for the veteran. “Following discussions with my family, coaches and team-mates I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international rugby,” he stated on announcing his decision. “My body and mind need a change of direction and so I have made the difficult decision to step back from international rugby. I have given this decision a lot of thought and I feel that this is the right time for me to hang up my international boots.”
Marler will be remembered for his time on the English team with many heartwarming memories shared by fans and England players alike. Despite him taking this decision, fans across England still have faith that their team would go on to conquer world rugby. Their belief stems from the strong bond within the team and how they hold their teammates in high regard.
His last match for Harlequins in England's top-level Premiership is still expected to be later this year.
