The Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate to end their two-game losing streak and gain some momentum as the second half of the season gets underway. Their Week 10 matchup against the struggling Las Vegas Raiders might be just what they need to get their season back on track. While the initial injury report looked bleak, there is some promising news emerging from the Steelers camp that will certainly catch the attention of Raiders fans.
As of Monday, the Steelers injury report indicated that several key players were listed as out or limited in practice. However, there seems to be a growing sense of optimism within the team that some of these players might be ready to return to action sooner rather than later. The biggest news surrounds wide receiver Diontae Johnson and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, both of whom are reportedly making good progress in their recovery.
Johnson has been dealing with a nagging hamstring issue that forced him to sit out the last two games. His return to practice, albeit in limited capacity, has raised hopes that he might be available for the Raiders game. With Johnson back in the mix, the Steelers' anemic passing game, which has managed just 219 yards per outing over the past two weeks, is likely to get a significant boost.
On the defensive side of the ball, Heyward's presence is equally crucial. A key component of the Steelers' vaunted defensive front, Heyward has been missing in action since suffering an injury in Week 5. While his participation in practice has been limited so far, the expectation is that he will see increased playing time against the Raiders. If he can return to his pre-injury form, it would be a major plus for a Steelers defense that has allowed an average of 31.5 points per game over the past two weeks.
The news is not all good for the Steelers, however. Cornerback Levi Wallace and safety Tre Norwood are still dealing with injuries and their availability for the Raiders game remains uncertain. Given the Steelers' recent struggles on defense, the addition of either of these two players would be a significant plus.
From the Raiders' perspective, their biggest concern will be the possibility of facing a rejuvenated Steelers offense with Johnson back in the lineup. The Raiders defense has allowed an average of 278 passing yards per game over the past three weeks, and they will need to figure out a way to contain Johnson and the Steelers' receivers if they want to emerge victorious.
The Week 10 matchup between the Steelers and Raiders promises to be an entertaining affair, with both teams battling to stay relevant in their respective playoff races. If the Steelers can get their pieces back together, they could prove to be a formidable opponent for the Raiders. On the other hand, if the Raiders can capitalize on the Steelers' injuries, they might just be able to come away with a crucial win.
