As the calendar flips to 2025, the Carolina Hurricanes are thinking about what they want for Christmas. And, just like anyone else, they have a lot on their minds when it comes to gifts from Santa.
In recent years, the Canes have consistently been one of the top teams in the league and it could be just a few special presents from Santa that take them to the next level. With some skill, some luck and maybe even a new sweater or two, the team could have a great winter.
Signing Andrei Svechnikov to a contract extension
Hurricanes fans know better than anyone that Andrei Svechnikov is a key piece of the team. A big-scoring scorer with a great attitude and youthful energy, Svechnikov was meant to be in Raleigh. With Svechnikov's signing to a fair contract, the Hurricanes' confidence in making deeper playoff runs in the future should be on the rise.
Trevor van Riemsdyk to lead for the power play
A key part to the Carolina Hurricanes' winning 2024 so far has been the inclusion of Trevor van Riemsdyk on their power play unit, and if the fans had it their way, this successful partnership would reach far into the new year.
Auston Matthews Leaves Nothing Else to Be Desired
This one might be a stretch, considering just how hard it would be to make such a move happen. On the back of Auston Matthews playing a season worthy of the Hart Trophy however, Canes fans know exactly what they want this year; more of that style. When that's said and done, they really want the superstar to come their way. This remains one gift that the fans would not mind seeing arrive to PNC.
Finding Consistency
Last year the team set a team record for most consecutive home games with at least a point, in what looked like was going to be an incredible leap for the young roster. Ultimately, the players were just unable to maintain that level of performance across an entire NHL season. Given a new helping of consistency and the Canes would be just as deadly as the Hurricanes we've grown to love to play for this season.
Brent Burns Staying Healthy
This Christmas break, Brent Burns' big gift to the team seems pretty clear. Canes fans wish for his continued good health during his time in Raleigh and hopefully Santa delivers.
With Santa already knowing everything he needs on Christmas Eve, we'll get the presents when the day is through. He knows all of these things we want this year; all we can do is keep on believing - in Santa and in the incredible momentum building towards a solid on-ice product with Carolina - and cheer for the wishes on this year's Hurricanes' wish list.
