Openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge put on an unbeaten century partnership as England hammered debutants Scotland by 10 wickets at the Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday. England restricted Scotland to a mediocre total, and then effortlessly chased it down with their opening duo putting on an unbeaten century partnership. The crushing victory is expected to boost England's morale as the team heads into the semi-finals of the tournament.
If there was one dark horse expected to cause an upset, it was definitely Scotland, who despite being debutants at the tournament had shown ample skills. However, England proved too strong for them as they chased the mediocre total with much ease. Maia Bouchier added 113 runs in her unbeaten innings off just 65 deliveries. Danni Wyatt-Hodge supported her beautifully as she added unbeaten 76 runs to take her side over the line without even breaking a sweat.
Scotland won the toss and elected to bat first which would prove a terrible decision as the English bowlers were in her top form. The bowlers bowled tight lines and managed to restrict the Scottish women at a mere total of 89-10 as they failed to utilize the full 20 overs. Their top six batsmen failed to make any serious impact on the innings.
England’s stellar performance didn't go unnoticed by their skipper who praised her team for their dominating display of skill. We restricted them to a chaseable total of 89 to which we cruised to victory, added the skipper.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Australia sealed their place in the T20 World Cup after beating India by just five runs. At one stage in the tournament the Australians seemed headed for one of the biggest early exits.
The biggest question arising here is will the Indian eves be able to bounce back from this big loss? They were always in a game and only failed to run their chase. The tournament is proving to be highly challenging as competition heats up with the Australians and England’s dominant performance becoming more like a habit. Can the Indian team prove their doubters wrong and pull up their socks to fight this huge loss?
