The sports world has been left reeling after a major announcement regarding the 2026 Commonwealth Games. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, it has been revealed that the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will feature a drastically reduced program, with several high-profile sports being axed from the event.
The 2026 Games, which are being relocated to Scotland after Victoria’s withdrawal as host, will now feature just 10 events, a significant decrease from the 19 featured in the 2022 edition held in Birmingham. This decision has left many fans and athletes stunned, with several popular sports being cut from the program.
Among the sports to be left out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games are hockey, rugby sevens, and cricket, which are considered to be some of the biggest draws for the event. Other sports to be axed include diving, badminton, beach volleyball, mountain biking, rhythmic gymnastics, squash, and table tennis.
On the other hand, athletics and swimming were the only sports guaranteed a spot on the program, with netball and boxing also included. The other sports to make the cut are track cycling, weightlifting, 3x3 basketball, and lawns bowls, all of which include a para equivalent.
As part of a cost-saving measure, the 10 sports will be spread across just four venues, including Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena, and the Scottish Event Campus. Additionally, athletes and support staff will be staying in hotel accommodation rather than an athletes’ village.
This move has sparked a mix of emotions, with some people understanding the need for cost-cutting measures while others are disappointed and even outraged by the decision to axe so many sports from the program.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games program will be officially released later on Wednesday, and it remains to be seen how fans and athletes will react to the changes. One thing is for sure, however - the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be a very different event from what we have seen in the past.
