Mackenzie Arnold has long been the Matildas' go-to goalkeeper, known for her exceptional skills and quiet confidence in the net. However, the 29-year-old's rise to the top wasn't without its setbacks. In a recent interview, Arnold revealed the shocking moment that almost derailed her career - the sudden departure of her beloved coach Ante Juric's assistant, Gary Phillips but more so, Gustavsson's exit left a gaping hole in it.
Arnold reflected on the 'turbulent' time period that led to Gustavsson's exit. 'It was never going to be easy and we knew we'd go through some ups and downs when we became a part of this new-look team.'
Despite the instability, Arnold adapted quickly and the lessons she learned along the way led to growth and development that few athletes experience. The end result? A grittier, more resilient Arnold ready to take on some of the world's toughest opponents.
In breaking her silence on the dark moments, Arnold spoke about the sense of desperation that spread throughout the locker room as players scrambled to pick up the pieces. This desperation drove the team to question if things were salvageable.
Reflecting on this ordeal, Arnold believes she's a better athlete for it. 'You need the darkest of nights in football to appreciate the brightest of nights, You grow and that makes the journey sweeter.'
Arnold's assessment might be true for her career so far, which has seen its fair share of twists and turns but this journey leaves a clear-cut message - getting comfortable can derail athletes.
This setback came as an untold warning for Arnold as she is pushing forward - and you could say the blow was just the wake-up call she needed in such a ruthless business like professional football.
