BOULDER, Colo. - In a world where social media reigns supreme, one legendary figure has managed to stay old-school in style and charm. Meet Joe Romig, the 84-year-old, who is just as known for his toughness on the field as a linebacker during the University of Colorado football team back in the '70s as he for being an avid, yet selective, social media fan.
Despite his penchant for what his friends and fellow CU alumni refer to as a '50s vibe, Romig is not oblivious to the ways of modern-day social media. In fact, his favorite platform is, without a doubt, TikTok - albeit with a twist. Rather than accessing the app on his iPhone or the Internet, Romig s preferred way of watching his beloved TikTok videos happens to be on a wall clock that chimes every 12 times when noon hits. That's right, folks - this NFL Hall of Famer's idea of keeping up with his love for fun viral clips differs greatly from ours, but hey, being unique never hurt anyone, right?
But despite an intriguing uniqueness that has captured the hearts of many, Romig s old-school taste is not typically what draws the attention of youngbloods nationwide. That honor, my friends, belongs to none other than the man he s obsessed with: Travis Hunter - a man so charismatic and skilled at the craft of football he has earned the title of the best Colorado Football Player of all time, as per many of the game s greatest icons.
When referring to the iconic CU Buffaloes of the 1970s, the words talent, grit, and prowess are, more often than not, used interchangeably with the name Joe Romig. As the face of a powerful football team, he brought forth what many thought was the complete package - one that kept his opponents on their toes and fans on the edge of their seats with excitement.
Despite the obvious nostalgia some of us may feel upon listening to Romig speak of the legendary University of Colorado football team he used to be a part of, no CU aficionado can downplay the greats these days. That is where names such as the talented Travis Hunter come in, ensuring that their rightful place within football folklore and myth is held tight.
At first glance, a comparison between a modern phenomenon and an old-school legend might seem a tad illogical because of the disparate realities each lives and works under. However, the numerous CU games that display talented individuals showcase one key detail - we should all, in fact, be looking into what young Travis Hunter is doing on the field and draw as much inspiration from it as possible.
CU alum, Joe Romig, has been at the center of it all, explaining this: 'Travis, the way I see it, can do absolutely everything on a football field. The moment that his eyes lock onto the ball and into play is that brief instance at which you truly understand you re witnessing a star develop right in front of you eyes. I mean - the best ones were a joy to watch, but this, kid, takes that definition to an entirely new level.'
