A dramatic, true-crime rendition of the 1989 Menendez brothers trial that perturbed the nation is arriving on Netflix from producer Ryan Murphy as part of his “Monster” anthology series. Last year, Season 1 of the show, which starred Evan Peters as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, went on to earn six Emmy nominations and a win.
Season 2, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”, delves into the real-life story of the Menendez brothers, who, in 1989, brutally murdered their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, with shotguns in their Beverly Hills mansion. The brothers, who were 18 and 21 at the time of the crime, claimed to have been motivated by years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by their parents.
Their case sparked widespread attention and outrage, partly due to the brutal nature of the crime and partly due to the privileged background of the brothers. Many saw the case as a quintessential illustration of how a life of wealth, luxury, and privilege could lead to debauched moral values and heinous crimes.
As the trial progressed, the brothers tried to defend themselves by highlighting the alleged abuse that led to their actions, but many questions remain unanswered to this day. Did the brothers truly experience the abuse they claimed, or was this just a smartly crafted defense to elicit sympathy from the public and the court?
Ryan Murphy’s portrayal of the events promises to delve deeper into the lives of the Menendez brothers and uncover more details about the actual events and motivations behind their actions. Fans of his previous work on “American Horror Story” and “Feud” are eagerly anticipating this latest installment.
Given the gruesome nature of the crime and the cultural significance of the Menendez trial, it is no surprise that it continues to inspire and intrigue TV audiences to this day. Netflix subscribers can expect another gripping and thought-provoking series from Murphy that digs deeper into the motivations of two men who, in their immaturity and distress, made a decision that would lead to irreparable consequences.
Since being diagnosed with mental health disorders and shown remorse for their actions, Lyle and Erik Menendez are currently serving life prison terms with chance of parole in the 42nd and 45th year respectively.
Although the story will dramatize the Menendez brothers' story, viewers can expect many historical facts to be presented as the story aims to honor the lives lost in such tragic circumstances and analyze one of the darkest chapters in American true crime history.
