Pete Alonso golfed an early three-run homer and the New York Mets hammered an ineffective Jack Flaherty, extending the National League Championship Series with a 12-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5. Starling Marte had three doubles, and Alonso added two more hits including his long home run.
The Dodgers' bats didn't lack for effort however, with four home runs but they were outmatched on the night as the Mets scored 12 runs on 21 hits in their highest scoring performance of the postseason.
The series now shifts back to Los Angeles for Game 6, with a deciding Game 7, if necessary.
Mets' offense came quickly as Alonso took Flaherty deep to center, a three-run shot in the bottom of the second inning for an early 3-0 Mets lead.
While Los Angeles was able to tack on two runs to make it a one-run game after the top of the third, New York responded immediately in the fourth, scoring three more to open up a four-run lead.
The Mets' lead didn't stay that way for long. The Dodgers' Justin Turner hit a two-run home run to bring the deficit back to two. Not to be outdone, the Mets, scored five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a bases-loaded double.
