NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday held wide-ranging discussions to bolster strategic ties between the two countries as Berlin looks to strengthen its relationship with New Delhi at a time when the West is seeking to counter China's growing influence in the region.
The meeting between Modi and Scholz is a significant development in the current global scenario, where the dynamics of international relations are witnessing a paradigm shift. With the West becoming increasingly wary of China's expanding military and economic footprint, Germany and other European nations are looking towards India as a key partner in South Asia.
India and Germany have been steadily consolidating their bilateral relationship in recent years, and this interaction between Modi and Scholz is expected to further boost ties between the two nations. Berlin has been making aggressive diplomatic overtures to New Delhi as part of its efforts to build a strong partnership with India.
India's growing stature in the international arena, coupled with its strong economy and diverse cultural heritage, has caught the fancy of many Western nations seeking to forge alliances in a world that is experiencing a re-alignment of power dynamics. This becomes even more significant in light of an increasingly assertive China, whose rapid military modernization, economic robustness, and 'Belt and Road Initiative' have set alarm bells ringing in many a global capital.
In this backdrop, Europe has been ratcheting up its diplomatic outreach to countries like India, which it perceives as key strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific and a vital counter-balance to offset China's growing power. This marks an inversion of historical trends as well, with the global footprint and influence of China having expanded significantly during President Xi Jinping's first decade in power.
India, on its part, recognizes that the unfolding security dynamic of the Indo-Pacific demands closer cooperation with such nations as the United States, Japan, Germany, and Australia. In return, the German initiative to engage India is being seen by many as a massive development, especially when set against the broader challenges that the liberal international order is now confronting.
The multifaceted cooperation that is currently developing between Germany and India reflects a robust set of historical ties. However, Germany's unprecedented support for India's candidature for being designated as a NATO Plus member underscores that new strategic realities are re-crafting priorities on the Indian side.
This increasing collaboration between the world's fourth-largest and fifth-largest economies may also help to bolster cooperation on a multitude of fronts, from trade, investment, and innovation, to strategic defense and security cooperation.
It remains to be seen whether these ambitious goals can be met with actionable diplomacy and the institutionalization of deep and resilient partnerships. Yet the fact that leaders such as Modi and Scholz are having such meaningful engagements promises a thrilling future of strategic collaboration for all the stakeholders involved.
