CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox announced on Friday that they will be parting ways with third baseman Yoán Moncada and catcher Max Stassi, declining the $25 million option on Moncada and the $7.5 million option on Stassi.
Moncada, who has been with the White Sox since 2017, missed nearly the entire 2023 season due to a lingering left adductor strain. The decision by the White Sox front office comes as no surprise, given Moncada's limited playing time and the team's financial constraints.
Moncada, 28, had a promising start to his MLB career, showcasing impressive power and speed. However, he struggled to maintain consistency and failed to live up to expectations in recent seasons. The decision to decline his option is likely a move to free up cap space and allocate resources to other areas of the roster.
Stassi, 31, joined the White Sox in 2022 and served as a backup catcher to Yasmani Grandal. Although he saw limited action, Stassi impressed with his defensive skills and versatility behind the plate. His departure is likely a result of the team's desire to go younger at the catcher position.
The moves by the White Sox signal a significant shift in the team's strategy, as they look to rebuild and retool for the 2024 season. With Moncada and Stassi no longer on the roster, the team will need to address gaps at third base and catcher.
White Sox fans will be keeping a close eye on the team's offseason moves, as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 campaign. The decision to decline Moncada and Stassi's options is just the beginning of what promises to be an eventful winter for the South Side club.
