Cambridge United manager Garry Monk was left fuming after his side’s excellent performance against Northampton Town on Saturday ended in a draw, leaving him to feel that his team ‘warranted three points’.
“I think we deserved the win, and I’m not just saying that because I’m the manager,” Monk said in a post-match interview. “Our performance was excellent, and we created enough chances to take all three points.”
Cambridge United dominated the match, with a array of attacking moves and clear-cut chances that left the opposing team reeling. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to find the net and secure the win.
“The lads were fantastic today, and I couldn’t have asked for more,” Monk said. “We’ve worked hard on the training pitch, and it showed today. We just needed that bit of luck in front of goal to take the win.”
Northampton Town manager Jon Brady, on the other hand, was relieved that his team escaped with a point. “Cambridge were excellent today, and we were lucky to come away with a draw,” Brady said. “But we’ll take it and move on to the next match.”
The result is a testament to the competitive nature of the league, where teams are always fighting for points. Cambridge United and Northampton Town have shown that they are two of the teams to watch this season, and their fans will be eager to see how they perform in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, Garry Monk will be looking to work on his team’s finishing in front of goal, as that is what ultimately denied them the three points on Saturday. With some fine-tuning and a bit of luck, Cambridge United could be a force to be reckoned with in the league.
