Rafael Nadal, widely regarded as one of the all-time greats of tennis, recently fell to fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in what appears to be one of the final matches of his illustrious career. The highly anticipated exhibition match between Nadal and Alcaraz was part of the "Six Kings Slam" event in Saudi Arabia. Nadal emerged on the losing side, going down 6-3, 6-3 to the 21-year-old Alcaraz.
The 38-year-old Nadal, who has won 22 Grand Slams including an astonishing 14 French Open titles, has announced his decision to retire after the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month. The pressure seemed to be mounting, given Nadal admitted his fitness level was not quite up to par with that of the tour's top players.
"I have not much pressure here. I'm just trying to have fun," Nadal candidly stated during the post-match conference. He visibly acknowledged his struggles with maintaining peak form. "I know I'm going to play against players that are in much better shape than me because they are on the professional tour and winning tournaments," Nadal added.
On the other hand, Alcaraz expressed his thoughts on facing his childhood idol. "It's a little bit sad – it was not a really comfortable moment for me. Obviously, I really wanted to win," Alcaraz revealed. He also shared that despite being aware the Saudi crowd was largely in favor of Nadal, he sought to allow the tennis legend to revel in their support. "Once you step on the court, it's no friends, no idols" Alcaraz aptly put it.
Nadal's most recent singles match came to an end when he fell to old rival Novak Djokovic in the second round at the Olympic Games in Paris. That marked a less-than-ideal conclusion, as Nadal hopes to end on a stronger note. Nadal will have the chance to rectify this when he meets Djokovic again for third place in the Saudi exhibition on Saturday, a meeting he's bound to savor. "Having Novak in front, it's like a nostalgic thing," Nadal said.
However, Nadal still has another tournament left before hanging up his boots. As for his form in the Davis Cup Finals next month, Nadal remains uncertain. "Emotionally, I'm sure I will be ready. In terms of physically, in terms of tennis level – there's still a month to prepare," Nadal conveyed. True to form, he took an honest stance when asked if he might have doubts about his participation in singles matches, assuring that he will not hesitate to speak up if needed.
The match on Saturday will be the farewell ceremony for Nadal and the tennis world will get to relish one last meeting between two tennis greats, Nadal and Djokovic.
