In the modern-day world, the economy of any nation can be deemed prosperous or precarious, depending on its various policies. The recent fiscal announcement of a 50% electricity subsidy for public hospitals and educational institutions has raised a series of questions that warrant introspection. Among these, the most predominant question is: Is this the right direction for the nation?
As the saying goes, a… nation’s fate is not decided by economic development, but rather, it is reflected by the progress of its public institutions. At the center of this realisation is education and healthcare. It is hard to find any developed country with poor public healthcare and education. Likewise, countries that have better education and healthcare have higher chances of becoming high-income countries in the future.
At its core, this policy encourages ‘public hospital 2.0’ and ensures the betterment of institutional care with affordable electricity costs, freeing resources for the additional recruitment of medical staff, procurement of additional medical supplies, and many more.
Since one of the key resources that hospitals utilise is electricity, its cost can be greatly decisive in the way a hospital manages its financial situation. With an electricity cost subsidy of 50%, there are various positive and negatives roles it can play in the healthcare industry.
Looking at the brighter side, this can provide improved support to patients with the help of added medical staff and procurement of additional medical supplies. This will result in better healthcare facilities. And in addition to catering to patients’ needs, the government is also helping in the betterment of healthcare facilities for doctors and nurses. The work environment will see a significant upgrade as the hospitals will experience a seamless service with proper working amenities, along with an efficient backup during any power outage.
A study of the effect of medical equipment dependence on electricity found that the healthcare industry utilizes an incredible amount of electricity daily. This is because it is not just the healthcare staff that rely on electricity, but it is also the life-saving equipment used for the patient to get better. Medical equipment of all types require electricity in high amounts, so this leads to higher electricity costs which are the major obstacles that were being faced by Government hospitals, which were providing free services to poor patients. High electricity costs forced these hospitals to charge the patients for other services.
Even though there are these advantages, high costs are still required to maintain this plan after one point. It is clear that this is not a sustainable solution. Cost cannot be reduced, but in addition to that, the government should also invest to solve the root cause of high costs.
Furthermore, due to the 50% electricity subsidy for hospitals, this will reduce the cost of hospitals as well and ultimately reduce the cost of medical care provided to the patients. Since Government have no one to question them about the quality of a free service, so Government Hospitals always were at the receiving end and there were unnecessary issues being portrayed with Government hospitals, due to low-quality services by doctors and Non-Nursing staff due to no one can do anything for their negligence and lack of professionalism. But the real truth is the hospitals are being asked to perform similar to the hospitals having non-rivalled insurance cover insurance cover on full and that too with Zero Cost. If The similar case happens in Private then it would never had happened when both the patients from private and government, is then doctors from Government will never compromise with quality then and if the quality is seen, then the complaints can be handled in a well manner then.
Even though this is one of the benefits of electric cost subsidy, considering all the things there have been several potential concerns over the impacts of this initiative. But when a particular thing is not acceptable or is not liked, we should never discard the fact that there are people who will never allow negative things to come and if they are coming then we should never give up and start blaming the system and stop. Rather let focus that this coming of one bad point is also controlled eventually and ultimately it get nullified at the later stage.
