The Nest Learning Thermostat, now in its fourth generation, is still the gold standard for smart thermostats. When Google-owned Nest launched the original Learning Thermostat in 2011, it revolutionized the way people controlled the temperature in their homes. Since then, there have been continuous improvements and updates.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Learning Thermostat looks almost identical. The device still uses the same circular design and spun-metal dial, making it instantly recognizable as a Nest thermostat. The most noticeable upgrade is the addition of a 2.25-inch, high-resolution LCD display, which is much brighter and more colorful than before. The thermostat can also display more information, such as the indoor and outdoor temperatures and the current weather conditions.
One reason the Nest Learning Thermostat has been successful is its ease of use. Turning the dial clockwise to turn up the heat or counterclockwise to turn down the AC is intuitive enough for anyone to understand. You can also schedule temperature changes through the mobile app or let the thermostat learn your preferences and automatically adjust the temperature accordingly.
The auto-learning feature is possibly the best reason to own a Nest Learning Thermostat. It learns your daily routine over a few days and adjusts the temperature to the optimal levels based on your schedule. When it thinks youve left the house or are asleep, it will adjust to use less energy and save you money on your utility bill.
The companys Home/Away feature has also been extended. If you have other Nest-related devices such as Nest Protect, a smoke and carbon monoxide detector, Nest Secure, a security system, and Nest outdoor and indoor Wi-Fi cameras, all these devices become connected and coordinated. When the thermostat indicates that you are not home, the system can activate other features such as activating Nest outdoor cameras, locking doors, and turning off lights. This creates a high degree of security and can protect your home from potential intruders.
Another feature the Nest Learning Thermostat uses to save energy is the Energy Report. It shows how much energy the device has used over the past week compared with the same time last month. Additionally, because it knows how you heat or cool your home and has that information in real-time, it constantly analyzes this data and gives recommendations on ways to use less energy and save even more.
