Netflix released on Tuesday a documentary series called "Enigma," which delves into the life, career, and transformation of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The third and final episode of the series offers an in-depth look at the stunning process behind the Green Bay Packers drafting Jordan Love in 2020.
Many fans at the time questioned the decision to pick Love in the first round, given that Rodgers was still playing at an elite level and had several years left on his contract. The documentary reveals that even the organization's front office had doubts about the move.
According to an interview with head coach Matt LaFleur in the documentary, there was allegedly some resistance within the organization about drafting Love. However, LaFleur states that general manager Brian Gutekunst stood firm on his decision to pick Love, convinced that the young quarterback had immense potential.
When news broke of the Packers drafting Love, the entire NFL world was left stunned. Many couldn't understand why the Packers, with a Super Bowl window still open with Rodgers at the helm, had spent a first-round pick on another quarterback.
The documentary, which also explores Rodgers' personal life and his journey as a NFL player, provides an extraordinary look into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the decision to draft Jordan Love. While Rodgers offers little comment on the specific incident, he does express his frustration and disappointment in the documentary series.
"I have no idea what the plan was," Rodgers is heard saying in the documentary. "I couldn't even fathom it at the time." Rodgers then pauses for a moment, trying to hold back his emotions. "I think maybe, in some way, it's about me putting myself in someone else's shoes. But what I realized was that we were running on different paths. But the conversation does make you realize there was more in the locker room that people would be interested to know about." Rodgers doesn't specifically mention Gutekunst, but it's clear he's directing his frustration towards the general manager's call.
