Javonte Williams rushed two touchdowns and the Denver Broncos triumphed in coach Sean Payton's return to New Orleans, beating the banged-up and reeling Saints 33-10 on Thursday night. The Saints highly anticipated matchup against the Denver Broncos quickly descended into disaster as Sean Payton made a victorious return to the city he once called home for 15 years. As Payton stepped onto the field, he must have felt a mix of emotions - nostalgia, eagerness, and a hint of revenge. This matchup marked his first time back in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome since parting ways with the Saints, which ultimately put him in the driver's seat in Denver. The stakes were high but Payton, being the master tactician he is, managed to keep his cool and get his players pumped up for the big game. That confidence radiated down to his squad and as the whistle blew, the Broncos jumped into action with what looked like an unrelenting determination to bring home the W.
The Saints got off to a woeful start and were completely outmaneuvered by the high octane attack from Denver. Quarterback Russell Wilson connected with wide receiver Courtland Sutton for a crucial 45-yard pass in the early minutes of the second quarter. A few plays later, Denver kicker Brandon McManus successfully booted a 33-yard field goal to break the scoreless deadlock. Momentum momentarily shifted when Saints kicker Wil Lutz added a 44-yarder to level the game, only to end with a frustrating underwhelming score in the game's early minutes.
Sensing the restlessness of the Saints squad and a growing sense of desperation creeping into the Saints offense, the NFL stalwart knew they were slowly being tilted to a catastrophic losing position and promptly took the game by the scruff of the neck. When disaster struck the Saints this Thursday, Payton didn't shy away from using Javonte Williams. He knew in order to grab the win they would have to try a more old-school tactic, so after a grueling defensive stop Javonte Williams took the ball on third-and-3 and turned on the afterburners for the 14-yard rush for a first down. Yet another highlight in the making was just on the horizon when quarterback Russell Wilson made a beautiful play and got the pass off just as the big hit came, and that led to Williams again, running with reckless abandon through tackle after tackle. Even still, not to be defeated yet Williams willed himself into the end zone for a 4-yard run - giving the Broncos a commanding 10-3 lead as time expired in the first half - giving the sense the lead would soon snowball.
Now finding themselves in disarray, New Orleans tried desperately to reboot the tie the game. Injuries continued piling up for the Saints, including Jamel Mayfield being carted off the field early. Under increasing duress throughout the second half, the usually formidable Saints line buckled against Denver defensive pressure to cause yet another chaotic offensive showing for the team from the Big Easy.
