NHL Hockey Returns to Quebec, But One Thing is Missing - The Beloved Nordiques

October 4, 2024

QUÉBEC — The excitement of NHL hockey has once again taken over Quebec City, as the Los Angeles Kings arrived in town for a series of exhibition games. However, the palpable energy and enthusiasm of the crowd were bittersweet, as the reality set in that the team Nordiques fans had longed to see for years was nowhere to be seen.

The Quebec Nordiques, a beloved and iconic NHL team that called Quebec City home from 1972 to 1995, left an indelible mark on the hearts of its dedicated fan base. Despite their departure nearly three decades ago, the memory of the Nordiques continues to evoke strong emotions in the city.

As fans flocked to the Videotron Centre to witness the NHL's return, a mix of nostalgia and bitterness filled the air. Fans dressed in Nordiques jerseys, holding nostalgic signs and banners, couldn't help but feel a sense of what could have been.

It's a common sight in Quebec City, where the love for hockey is deeply ingrained in the community's fabric. The Nordiques may be gone, but their legacy lives on, with a loyal fan base that refuses to let go of the past.

The arrival of the Los Angeles Kings, a team that boasts some of the biggest stars in the NHL, is an exciting prospect for any hockey fan. However, for the people of Quebec City, it's just not the same as having their beloved Nordiques back.

There have been numerous attempts to revive the Nordiques franchise, but so far, none have been successful. The Quebec City market has been considered several times for NHL expansion or relocation, but for various reasons, it hasn't materialized.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has consistently stated that Quebec City needs a strong ownership group and a viable arena to support a team before the league considers expansion or relocation. While the Videotron Centre meets the NHL's arena requirements, securing stable ownership has been a challenging task.

As the Los Angeles Kings take on the Montreal Canadiens in the exhibition series, the focus will undoubtedly be on the action on the ice. However, for the fans of the Quebec Nordiques, the games will serve as a poignant reminder of what they once had, and what they continue to hope for – the return of their beloved team.
