NHL Hockey Returns to Quebec City But One Question Remains - Why Did the Nordiques Leave?

October 4, 2024

QUÉBEC — The Los Angeles Kings are in town this week, and while many in Quebec City are excited to see some live NHL hockey, there is a sense of sadness that still lingers. This week's visit from the Kings is a harsh reminder that the team the city truly longs to see is not the one gracing the ice.

It's been 25 years since the Quebec Nordiques, the beloved hometown team, packed up and moved to Colorado, leaving behind a city that was not only heartbroken but also felt betrayed.

The Nordiques were more than just a hockey team to the people of Quebec City. They were a source of pride, a symbol of the city's identity and a connection to the rest of the hockey world. Their departure left a void that has yet to be filled.

Many fans still hold out hope that one day the Nordiques will return, that the NHL will see the error of its ways and grant the city an expansion team. While these fans welcome the opportunity to see the Kings play, they make no secret of their true allegiance.

"It's great that the Kings are in town, but let's be real, they're not the team we want to see," said longtime Nordiques fan, Pierre LaFleur. "We want our Nordiques back, and until that happens, nothing else will do."

LaFleur's sentiment is echoed by many in the city, who despite the passing of time, still can't help but feel a sense of sadness whenever they think about the Nordiques leaving.

"It's like losing a part of yourself," said another fan, Marie Martin. "The Nordiques were such a big part of our lives, and when they left, it felt like a part of us was taken away."

While the NHL has shown no indication of returning to Quebec City anytime soon, the fans remain hopeful. They continue to attend games, cheering on whatever team happens to be in town, all the while holding out hope that one day their beloved Nordiques will return.

"It's not just about the hockey," said LaFleur. "It's about the memories, the camaraderie, the sense of community that the Nordiques brought to our city. We want that back, and until we get it, we'll continue to hold out hope."

The city may get a glimpse of NHL hockey this week, but for the fans of the Quebec Nordiques, it's just a reminder of what's missing.
