Lando Norris has dismissed Max Verstappen's claim that he would have also won the 2024 F1 title in the McLaren, suggesting the Dutch driver's assertions are so far-fetched that they belong in the realm of comedy.
Verstappen, who won the title in 2023 with Red Bull Racing, had claimed in an interview that he still would have emerged as the champion even if he was driving for McLaren this season.
However, Norris, who has been in impressive form this year and is one of the top contenders for the title, rubbished Verstappen's claim, saying it's nothing but a joke.
When asked about Verstappen's comments, Norris quipped that the Dutch driver should try his hand at comedy if he thinks he can make such outlandish claims and get away with it.
'I think it's ridiculous that Max would say something like that,' Norris said. 'I mean, come on, does he really believe that? It sounds like the stuff of comedy to me.'
Norris, who has consistently been one of the top performers on the grid this season, questioned Verstappen's ability to adapt to the demands of driving for a different team.
'I don't think Max realizes just how difficult it is to drive for a different team, with a different car, and with different teammates,' Norris said. 'It's not as simple as just jumping into a car and expecting to win.'
Norris pointed out that Verstappen's claim also undermines the hard work and dedication put in by the teams and drivers who have been competing at the highest level all season.
'If Max really thinks he can just waltz into a different team and win the title, then I think he's underestimating the competition,' Norris said. 'There are some incredibly talented drivers out there, and we all know how tough it is to win in F1.'
Verstappen's comments have sparked a mixed reaction from the F1 community, with some drivers praising his confidence, while others have questioned his motives.
However, one thing is clear: Lando Norris is not buying what Verstappen is selling, and the McLaren driver is not afraid to speak his mind and defend his team's honor.
