It’s not often that you see an England snub spark so much debate among fans, but Ollie Watkins has unwittingly taken center stage with his surprise comments on the Three Lions’ latest squad selection.
Watkins was left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent squad, and many expected him to take the news on the chin.
Instead, the Aston Villa striker pulled no punches in a candid interview, speaking about the hurt and frustration that came with being overlooked once again.
“It was tough to take, it always is when you’re left out of the squad,” Watkins said, before surprising fans with his next admission.
“I felt like I deserved to be in it, I deserve to be around the team, I feel like I can contribute to the team,” he added.
Watkins’ words have sent shockwaves throughout the football community, with some fans backing the Villa hitman while others have labelled his comments as ‘arrogant’.
However, as Watkins went on to explain, it’s not arrogance that drives his confidence, but rather a deep desire to prove himself on the biggest stage.
“I’ve always set high standards for myself, and I feel like I have the ability to be in the team,” he said.
Watkins has been a rock for Villa this season, scoring crucial goals and leading by example as the team has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign.
But while his club form has been undeniably impressive, Watkins knows that he needs to keep pushing the boundaries if he hopes to catch the eye of Southgate.
“I’ll just keep working hard, keep putting in the performances for Villa, and hopefully, that will be enough,” he said.
Only time will tell if Watkins’ bold comments will come back to haunt him, but one thing is for sure - the striker has earned the respect of his peers and fans alike with his refreshingly honest take on his international ambitions.
